Food, Science, and Technology in the classroom

Food, Science, and Technology in the Classroom

I am a foodie at heart. Everything and anything related to food is of tremendous interest to me. When you think of Home Ec. from your high school days you probably just remember making some cookies. Foods (Home Ec) now a days is much more than just baking cookies. In my foods class I try incorporate all other subjects as well, especially science.

Food is Science, its Art, it has History, it involves math,  and we can read, write, and talk about because its interesting. The reason I choose this video is because of the idea behind it. I truly support new cook books with science integrated in it. Most cook books are about the "how to" so its about time we got new cook books of the "whys" of baking and cooking.  I like the concept of how it shows food/cooking visuals through a scientific lens.

I always do demonstrations on how to cook different items. I teach my students the science and history behind.I feel it captivates their interest better and better engages them. For example when we were looking at bread making we compared all the breads and analyzed what went well for the breads that came out good and what went wrong for the ones that didn't.  Maybe the yeast didn't have enough time to bloom, maybe the temperature was to low, maybe they didn't knead the dough long enough. These are the reasons I teach my students about the since behind it. Learning is about reflecting on experience and figuring out why and how it happened, so that next time we are able to improve.

Having technology show what I cannot demonstrate is awesome. Take the video on poaching an egg under water, having the tools like a GoPro camera or the youtube video as displayed below I am able to show my students something that is not visible in the cooking process. One thing is to talk about it, but another thing is to show it. Like the saying goes "a picture is worth a thousand words". I am all for incorporating technology in the classroom. Its helps provides information through another perspective and engages the learner in so many ways
